Into the Woods
December 16th, 2014 / Los Angeles, CA / A
Cast: Miriam A. Laube (Witch), Jeff Skowron (Baker), Rachael Warren (Baker’s Wife), Jennie Greenberry (Cinderella), Jeremy Peter Johnson (Cinderella’s Prince/Voice of the Wolf), Howie Seago (The Wolf), Kjerstine Rose Anderson (Little Red Ridinghood), Miles Fletcher (Jack), Robin Goodrin Nordli (Jack’s Mother), John Vickery (Narrator/Mysterious Man), Royer Bockus (Rapunzel), John Tufts (Rapunzel’s Prince), Catherine E. Coulson (Cinderella’s Stepmother/Milky White/Granny/The Giant), Katie Bradley (Florinda/Sleeping Beauty), Christiana Clark (Lucinda/Snow White), Robert Vincent Frank (Cinderella’s Father), Mauro Hantman (Steward).
Notes: A fantastic capture of Oregon Shakespeare Festival’s production performed at The Wallis Annenberg Center in Los Angeles. Yet another completely reimagined and cleverly staged production of the show. This production is deconstructed with no set (the only thing on the two-story scaffold set is the 18-member orchestra). The colorful whimsical costumes evoke a mash up of Disney animated movies and modern dress. Some of the directorial choices seem a little odd (The Wolf-played by two people-and Red Riding Hood use American Sign Language to communicate while singing; the golden egg-laying hen sells Android Tablets, actors vogue and disco; and the Witch who starts the show in a wheelchair has an “assistant” who helps out and occasionally comments on the dialogue). But overall the show is very clever and entertaining, and the critics loved it. The first two and a half minutes of Act One are blacked out, but the show is intact after that, and beautifully filmed. The show was stopped during the Act Two Finale for a medical emergency in the audience, but the show resumes without a hitch.

Cast: Ellen Greene, Jake Gyllenhaal, Tracy Nicole Chapman, Eddie Cooper, Joe Grifasi, Marva Hicks, Anwar Kareem, Ramona Keller, Taran Killam
Notes: Shot from the very back of City Center so there's some spotlight washout that's never too bad and a head that's shot well around.

Tales of the City
2011 / San Francisco / A
Cast: Judy Kaye, Manoel Feliciano, Mary Birdsong, Wesley Taylor, Betsy Wolfe, Diane Findlay, Josh Breckenridge
Notes: It's an in-house product, originally made for rehearsal and understudy use. So there's no zooms. It's on the first row of the balcony, providing a secure view of the whole stage, which never varies. Of course, there are no heads blocking the view, or jiggling or blackouts. The lighting pretty much washes out faces, but the sound is pretty good.

Cast: Scarlett Johansson, Liev Schreiber, Jessica Hecht, Santino Fontana, Corey Stoll, Alex Cendese, Michael Cristofer, Anthony DeSando, Antoinette LaVecchia, Mark Morettini, Joe Ricci, Robert Turano, Marco Verna.
Notes: Features Santino Fontana! This was filmed right before he was injured in previews and replaced. Also, this was shot with a head in the way, shot around very nicely, but it is visible in certain scenes in the bottom of the screen. Not HD.
